Should I Become a Stage Mom?

So my kiddo was watching TV one day and all of the sudden he jumped up and starting singing and doing the whole dance routine from the Fresh Beat Band. He's 3 and I had never seen him do anything like this, and it certainly wasn't prompted by me! Guess he's got my musical genes though.

Then last Sunday I volunteered in his Sunday school class and found out that they have performers who lead them in similar upbeat songs with elaborate dance moves. Alex was really into it, but at least that explains where it comes from.

It's great when TV gets our kids moving! And little kids, their freedom to move to music uninhibited, most of our lose that as adults. It would be fun to go back to that, wouldn't it?

I'm chuckling at your last line. Thanks for the very very thoughtful response, although seriously I was totally kidding with the title. Performance arts are not something I would ever encourage my kid to do. I'm about the furthest thing from a stage mom you'll ever get.

I like how, even when he noticed you recording him, you son kept right on dancing. So often, as adults, we stop "performing" when we notice others watching us.

I've scrolled through your other posts, and love your photos. I take photos too and need to learn more creativity with that as well.

Thanks! I love how unafraid kids are to look silly. The younger they are, the less they care about how they look.

Yes, it would be great fun to be able to dance with no fear like that :)

I wouldn't discourage it but there is a definite limit to how much time and money I'd sacrifice for a kid to try to become famous or something. Dance lessons I can handle, flying to Vegas? Not so much :)

My parents admitted to me, once I was an adult, that they actively discouraged me from pursuing any arts except piano...and only that because it's so academic. I begged for vocal lessons for years, from a young age. Not to mention dance and theater. My mom says she was afraid of my becoming a "starving artist". She says she was sure I'd pursue fashion design for awhile. They steered me toward academics. It wasn't till I took ballroom dancing in college that I realized how much I loved dancing. I hope I have learned from their mistake.
