I don't have too much interesting or funny to blog about today, so I'll use this occasion to get all schmaltzy on ya. I am so NOT a sappy person, but church makes me emotional.
Today is the first Sunday in Advent, the four weeks of anticipation of Christmas. I love Christmas, and the whole Christmas season, so I love Advent. Today in church a family shared their favorite Christmas memory and their son who had just returned from Iraq lit the Advent wreath. We sang wonderful carols that spoke about all the prophesies of the Old Testament that were fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. And our pastor gave a great Christmas sermon based on Psalm 77. He also referenced Galations 4:4, a profound verse that sums up why Christmas is so fantastic:
"But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons."
How great is that?! We sang Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, which the first verse knocks me over. Here's the words I like so much:
Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
I'm getting all verklempt. Talk amongst yerselves.
