While reading one of my favorite daily blogs this morning I happened upon this post, where fellow Philly girl Ginger recalls her need for speed and loud music.
Candied Ginger
This reminded me of the days, pre-baby, that I loved to drive really fast and blare music. I consider myself to be an excellent driver...my dad taught me well and made me get all kinds of experience driving our family tank and the big mini-van all over creation. He insisted I drive on long trips, trips to downtown Philly and NYC and Boston...the moment I got my license I became his chauffeur. Anyway, after driving huge cars, I learned that I could handle small cars really well at much faster speeds. My first car was a little Saturn. Only four cylinders but it had pep. Never got pulled over....ever. I started to get pretty brazen having never been pulled over. Then when I started getting some fat promotions and raises at my last job I bought a 2004 Nissan Maxima....a fabulously gorgeous sports edition with extra wide wheels and 286 hp. My job at the time had me flying all over the country every week mostly driving rental cars, so the Maxima didn't get much play at first. After a particularly long trip to California (where I drove like everyone else, long distances at top speeds) I was driving home in my Maxima from the airport on the Friday before Labor day. I loooooooved how it felt going 80 down the turnpike. Then I came to my homestretch, Rt 176 from the turnpike to Reading. It is a ten mile connector highway, four lanes, 65 mph speed limit, hardly any traffic ever and never any cops. So I decided to see how it felt to go up over 100. I pushed it up just over 100 mph and then saw some cars on the horizon and backed off. As I dropped down to a much more reasonable speed I passed an exit and saw the cops lined up waiting. You can imagine what I said here. He pulled out and waved me over. My heart raced as I fumbled around for my license and registration. I can't cry under pressure, so I figured I would be as polite as possible in my frozen panic. As I handed the adorable officer my info, he said in a calm tone
Cute Officer: "My buddy back there clocked you doing 90."
Me: "90!!!" (feigning shock)
Cute Officer: "Any reason you were going that fast?"
Me: "No sir, no reason at all."
Cute Officer looks at me, reads info and pauses for a few minutes.
Cute Officer: "Did you know your car was out of inspection?"
Me: "What? No I had no idea" (honestly shocked)
Cute Officer: "Is this a new car?"
Me: "Kind of...but I thought the sticker was good for a year"
Cute Officer: "Nah, when it's new sometimes it's due a certain month"
Me: "I'm sorry I honestly didn't know"
More moments of scared silence.
Cute Officer: "Ok I'm gonna cut you a break. I'm not going to give you a ticket for speeding. I'll give you a ticket for being out of inspection, which isn't a moving violation and doesn't add points to your license."
Me: "Oh thank you so much officer" (batting eyelashes)
Cute Officer: "Just slow down"
Me: "Oh I will!"
Later after I recounted the story to my friends, praising God that he didn't catch me doing more than 90 or I would've lost my license, my guy friends all got pissed asked me if I flashed him or what. I just love being a girl.
